Tesla powered Miata
Why wait for Tesla’s prices to come down, when you can retrofit a Mazda Miata to battery electric using a Tesla Roadster motor and controller? Built by Torque Trends, the ’99 model shown here has 100 Lithium NMC chemistry cells and a 22 kW battery pack, said to be good for as much as 115 miles on a charge. Torque Trends used its single-speed gearbox, called the ev-Torque Box, which has a ratio of 2 to 1. The rear axle ratio is 4.3 to 1.
While there’s a slight weight gain of 40 pounds, the power gain is roughly equivalent to 100 horses. With full torque on demand, the car is much quicker, with a claimed 0-to 60 mph acceleration of 3.9 sec, and a top speed of 138 mph.
