Turkey Rod Run

Story and Photos by Joe Greeves

In years past, we enjoyed attending events specifically dedicated to replicas and other handcrafted cars. We don’t see that type of car show as often now, so we search out replicas at more diverse displays, such as the 2016 Turkey Run at the Daytona International Speedway.

Held during Thanksgiving weekend, and now in its 43rd year, the Turkey Run is the largest car show and swap meet in Florida, and decidedly street rod-oriented. But with attendance estimated at more than 6,000 vehicles, even a small percentage of replicas is enough to keep you occupied. So there’s something for everyone to savor.

Major replica manufacturers were on hand like Brookville and Bebop, individually owned replicas dotted the scene, and virtually every third car could be classified as a specialty vehicle. Manufacturers and swap meet vendors were everywhere, happy to provide the finishing touches on whatever is taking shape in your garage.

The Car Corral was equally impressive with more than 1,500 vehicles looking to drive home with new owners. And that’s just the beginning. Celebrity cars like the Munster Koach, Dragula, the Green Hornet, and the Monkeemobile added a touch of celebrity nostalgia. Visitors enjoyed the rockabilly tunes of the musical group Go Get Gone, checked out Artisan Alley offering fashion and art and sampled goodies at the dozens of food vendors on the midway. Finally, the Mecum Mobile Experience gave visitors an opportunity to see firsthand what it’s like to be in the middle of a Mecum Auction.

It’s all for a good cause, too, as the Turkey Run has given more than $7 million to charities and local programs, projects and recreational facilities over the years. The next opportunity to have fun in Daytona is the Spring Turkey Run, March 24-26, 2017. That’s when you can take a ceremonial lap around the Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Gentleman, start your engines!
